Replication FAQs
Q. What are the differences between Duplication and Replication?
A. Duplicated discs have data "burned" onto them by a laser burning the dye on a prepared surface. Duplication is usually less expensive for orders under 500 discs and turnaround times are much quicker.   The replication process starts with the creation of a glass master. This glass master is then used to make the replication master for an injection/stamping process. Unlike many of our competitors, Perfect Image Video does not charge for creating glass masters. Replication is less expensive for large orders and includes full color offset printing.

Q. What is the time limit on CDs and DVDs?
A. CDs have a time limit of 76 minutes if you want them to be compatible with most playback equipment. DVDs don't have a time limit. Instead they have a capacity limit of 4.7 gigs for a DVD-5 and 8.5 gigs for a DVD-9. Compression will determine how much data you can get on a DVD, but be careful not to compress your images so much that they do not look good when played back. It is a good idea to play a DVD on several different sizes of screen to see if the video quality meets your expectations.

Q. Do I need a barcode on my project?
A. That depends on how you intend to sell your item. For example if you are producing a music CD and intend to sell the CD through retail distribution then you might want to consider adding a barcode. Some retailers and other distributors will not accept a CD without a barcode. On the other hand if you have no intention of selling through distribution channels then a barcode is just wasted money.

Q. How much space should I leave for a barcode?
A. You should leave a space that is 1.25" wide and 1.0" tall for the barcode. Most people place the barcode on the back of the printed piece. For jewel cases that would be on the tray card.

Q. What is the difference between silkscreen & offset printing?
A. Offset printing on CDs and DVDs is the same method as offset printing onto paper. Four ink colors (CMYK - cyan, magenta, yellow and black) are transferred onto plates and rollers & then onto the CD/DVD surface. Offset printing onto CDs and DVDs is a newer process than silkscreen. The resolution is 175 lines per inch (lpi) and the surface is smooth and even. Offset printing is good for all types of CDs/DVDs, especially those containing photographic and detailed artwork. The overall quality of offset printing is much better than silkscreen.

Silkscreen printing is a process whereby the artwork is converted to screens & then the ink is pressed through the screens onto the CD or DVD. The average resolution of silkscreen printing is 85-135 lines per inch (lip).

Q. What are your set up and/or film charges?
A. Perfect Image Video does not charge any additional set up fees or film charges for our CD or DVD duplication or replication projects.

Many vendors charge set up fees and/or film charges in addition to their per CD/DVD charges. These additional fees can range from $25-150 for set up fees and $20-50 per color for films. When factored into the final cost, this can add up to $0.15 or more to the Per CD costs.

When comparing Perfect Image Video prices to other vendors, be sure to compare Total Costs (including all set up and film charges), rather than per CD/DVD costs.

Q. How do you ship the finished CDs or DVDs?
A. Our preferred shipper is either UPS or FedEx. Our default shipping method is Ground Shipping. If you prefer overnight, or 2nd day, please let us know!

For larger quantities (5000 or more bulk CDs/DVDs or 3000 or more CDs/DVDs with Jewel Cases), it is often more economical to ship freight. Please contact us for more information and availability for freight shipping to your destination. If you would like to ship the CD/DVDs using your company's shipping account, please contact us.

Q. What is your turnaround time?
A. Turn around times can vary greatly depending on the product ordered, and what is happening when your order is placed. Typical turn time for bulk discs and stock packaging items is 5-7 working days. We’re always here to try and meet your needs, whatever they may be so if you need a quicker turn don’t hesitate to ask.

Q. What is your minimum order?
A. Our minimum order for replicated disc is 500.

Q.Where and how do I send my artwork for labels or packaging?
A. Artwork may be submitted by e-mail, ftp or express carrier (UPS, FedEx etc.) If you are local, you can drop your artwork off in person.  Artwork should be in a flattened Adobe Photoshop(psd) , or a high resolution (min 300 dpi) jpeg (jpg) tiff file (tif) or a pdf file.
